The art of living. . .

Hobie  .  14 x 11"  .  oil on canvas
There are those among us who inspire and make us happy to merely be in their orbit.  They have rich histories full of countless stories, a loving family, a huge circle of dear friends and an even larger circumference of acquaintances.  They are comfortable in the company of the famous and have a room of photos to prove it from kings, queens, movie directors, presidents.  If lucky we cross the path of such rare beings and have the privilege to be drawn into their circle.  Did I mention they also have a talent for fostering human connection?  In spades.  Oh, and a sense of humor. . .so important!

Such is Hobie - he is not shy to speak of his love for family, children, grandchildren, and most especially his partner, his equal, his love. . .his wife.  I've had the good fortune this past year to rub up against the magic they both foster and I'm a better person for it.

Hobie just had an important milestone birthday, and the quick oil sketch featured above was commissioned in his honor and presented as a surprise.

To be honest, getting older, seeing the birthdays fly by, can be a tad daunting, but when you witness a zesty life well lived you begin to learn about their big love, deep curiosity and easy friendship.  That in turn gives rise to a powerful notion that lingers and rolls around in your mind long after the party is over.  That notion?  Why life will truly get larger as the years pass by if you simply open your arms, your heart and mind.

Sometimes I feel like the very tippy tip of an iceberg, not only in art but in the art of living.  How very fortunate for me to find myself surrounded by those who can teach me so much. . .
